A GIANT IS GONE
Today we lost a Democratic giant. A man so revered in his own state that the Republican governor has ordered the state flags at half-mast for five days in honor of his tireless fighting on behalf of Texas and of America.
Lloyd Bentsen was a man who broke the molds. He was a pro-business Democrat, a champion of the oil and gas industry, a vehement advocate of international trade, and a true southern gentleman.
Lloyd Bentsen was a man who stood up to the special interests that lobbied for more lenient tax codes. He climbed his way from county office to presidential cabinet, and an unsuccessful bid for vice-president in 1988 with Massachusetts' governor Michael Dukakis, as well as, his own bid for the Democratic nomination in 1976 against Jimmy Carter.
Lloyd Bentsen was a shrewd politician, slipping between, back and forth, between Democratic and Republican allies to get his agenda, and the agendas of the people he so faithfully served in Texas, accomplished.
But perhaps what history will note him for most is his 1988 remarks during the vice-presidential debate with Danny Quayle. When the bumbling, but smarter-than-Bush-Junior, junior senator from Indiana compared his time served against President Kennedy's, in what would be one of MANY times during that debate, Senator Bentsen, with calm, condescending tone, slowly moved his head towards Quayle and said, per se, ". . .I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. You Senator, are no Jack Kennedy." Priceless. Quayle stammered and then called foul, whining because he'd been "out-Boston harbored," if you will (I wonder if anyone reads this is they'll get that reference?). At that moment, it seemed certain that Bentsen would go on to become the vice-president. Oh well, win some, lose some.
If I wore a hat, it would be off to you Secretary Bentsen. You were a true gentleman and a crafty statesman. It is my honor to recognize you here for the first ever The-Voice's VOICE AWARD. Since I just made that up on the spur of the moment, I have no idea what it means and know for certain that it doesn't come with a stipend or any thing for that matter. But it is a tribute from one Democrat to another. Thank you, Senator.
And while I am on Quayle here, it reminds me of something I saw once that I had to bring up again. I may have posted this before, in fact I think I did, but its worth repeating:
"GEORGE W. BUSH: THE PRESIDENT QUAYLE WE NEVER HAD!"
Again, thank you Senator Lloyd Bentsen, D-TX.
VOTE DEMOCRATIC, if for no other reason than for Senator Bentsen!

De-LIGHT-fully Tacky Holga Lens Mod
Some things are just better less-than-perfect-driving an old AMC Gremlin or wearing JCPenney Plain Pocket jeans (my mom tried unsuccessfully to convince me were made by Levi's). The Holga lens c.1982 was just one of those things. A little blurry. A little off kilter. A little out of focus-kinda like their time- the Reagan '80s!

ALERT: New Mini-Blog for The Voice
Daily (or semi-daily) Jim Traficant-like "sermons" on things I can't allow my blood pressure to pontificate on too long!

Remember, a vote for someone other than a Democrat is a wasted vote (no offense Senator McCain!)!!

2006 Update
OK folks, I know that I've said before that I was going to start regularly posting here but The-Voice has been, shall we say, speechless for a couple of months and its about time I started talking again. The atrocities, the Gestapo-like tactics of this White House has made me seethe recently. The tragedies in my lineage home-state of West Virginia, now with 14 dead coal miners in two different mining "accidents" in three weeks; I've yet to comment on the colossal unpreparedness of what the residents of New Orleans faced with Hurricane Katrina; and several other bits that I'm chomping at the bit to comment on are not too far away.
Stick with me as I am trying to make some positive changes on the blog. I'm still a little uneasy with the template thing and making sure the HTML is correct.
Max is doing well. His teacher called him brilliant to me on the phone the other day. Also says he is a top-class negotiator. . .meaning he's a chip off the old block when it comes to talking, or at least trying to, talk his way out of or into situations. Additionally, he's become savant-like recently by picking up on his own how to add. Just say what's "x+y" and he'll give you an answer. . .one that's correct. Being anything but a mathematical genius, I cannot take credit for him picking that up from me!
So nonetheless, I'm still plugging along here, trying to make ends meet and struggling along in this democracy we call America. Being out "in the country" suits me well except with the price of gasoline (petrol for my British friends) which sometimes keeps me at home when I'd rather be doing something (when you have a 1984 Olds Delta 88 that off the production line got only 20 miles per gallon on a GOOD day, with 200,000 miles you choose your destinations more carefully!)
Not sure I mentioned it here on a personal note, but 2005 was quite a year for me. My sister, Desiree, had her first baby, my strapping little nephew Hank, who has taken a recent dislike to me and to most other men; she also got married to her boyfriend of ten years, David. Tragically, my grandmother, who at many, many times was like a mother to me, died from complications with emphysema on July 13, 2005, the same day, in fact, a half hour after, Max lost his first tooth. Betty Jean Hall Garrison (1931-2005) will always be with me, good or bad, looking over my shoulder and, if death and spirit should imitate life, pointing out what I'm doing wrong and steering me in the direction she sees fit for it to be done right in! I know that afternoon, heaven was rejoicing with the addition of its latest angel!
We still have a ways to go but its looking like that if the media can keep the Bush White House's shortcomings in the news long enough, and whittle away at that son-of-a-bitch Karl Rove, the Democrats might just win back the House, if not the Senate. And I'll be watching for my candidate to arise from our cold ashes for the White House in a few years. Could it be Barack Obama? I'd like it. Howard Dean? We'll see how he does with the Party chairmanship-- remember, he was my presidential primary candidate. I don't think Hillary Clinton could beat who I am certain will be the Republican candidate, Senator John McCain (whom if it is, I will have a hard time running into the ground as I see him as a good man and a fine legislator!).
Folks, when the morning star lowers and the sun takes it's place, I'll be right here, still watching my blood pressure while I watch the news, steaming and venting in some capacity about the wrongs of the right, the right of the left, and those of us left-over, the disenfranchised!
For now, The-Voice will quiet down. Until another day. . .
